Acupuncturist Heading Spiritual Retreats Published and academically acclaimed veterinarian/acupuncturist, Allen Schoen, DVM, will be facilitating Spiritual retreats for animal lovers and veterinarians from around the country. Dr. Schoen feels these retreats are something that is needed in our fast paced society. "Everyone is so busy, and not taking the time out to reflect a deeper relationship with all animals." Dr. Schoen's practice is geared primarily toward equine clients, treating them with acupuncture. Since his conversion to an acupuncture-based practice, some 25 years ago, the mainstream veterinary world has become much more accepting of the "Eastern Medicine." Dr. Schoen likes to refer to it as integrative medicine. He is also integrating a specially tailored retreat for his fellow veterinarians. Dr. Schoen calls it "rekindling the gift," giving the practitioner a chance to reconnect with "Why we are vets." He feels the time spent on these retreats can help veterinarians gain insights to their practices. But his work isn't just with the vets. Many people who attend the Kindred Spirits Retreats are animal owners who feel a deep connection with their dogs, cats and horses -- people who are looking for THEIR meaning in life and in a sense, a deeper level of healing. "As we grow spiritually, coming more aware and conscious, our deepening awareness also increases our sensitivity, leaving us deeply impacted by the suffering of the earth's creatures and feeling a need to do even more." This unique retreat offers an opportunity to take time out from the busy day to examine this seeming paradox and the resulting confusion it engenders. "Rather than being overwhelmed with the magnitude of our feelings and the enormity of the task, we will learn new ways to merge our feelings, emotions and actions into an integrated response that harmonizes current personal and world situations. The retreats are an opportunity to reflect rejuvenate and re-create our relationships with all beings. They are an opportunity to become a compassionate activist, to be of benefit to all living beings and the environment we share." Dr. Schoen has authored and co-authored two texts - "Veterinary Acupuncture, Ancient Art to Modern Medicine," and "Complementary and Alternative Veterinary Medicine" -- both geared toward the practitioner. He has also authored two books targeted for the animal owner: "Kindred Spirits" (Random House) and "Love, Miracles and Animal Healing" (Simon & Schuster). Dr. Schoen teaches complementary veterinary medicine at universities and conferences throughout the world. He is an affiliate faculty member at Colorado State University, College of Veterinary Medicine and a clinical associate professor at Tufts University, College of Veterinary Medicine.
