Cribbing Collars vs. Gum Implants
For years the collar has been the only device available as a cribbing deterrent. New case studies have begun on a ring that is implanted into the horse’s gums that will, in some cases, prevent horses from this annoying and physically inhibiting habit.
Socks is a 15-year-old Gelding that Nancy Wilson bought 3 years ago. He cribbed since she bought him. She tried the Miracle Collar™ and it worked, to a degree, but he still tried to crib with it on. Whenever they took the collar off he tried to crib. He was always gassy too. When her equine dentist suggested trying the ring she said “I’ll try anything to see if it works.”
Dennis Chapman, equine dentist, implanted one small ring and within two weeks Socks had the ring off and was back to cribbing. Chapman ordered a double ring implant and Socks has been free of cribbing ever since. “I feel great about the rings, he is not sucking air anymore. With the collar he had gas, now he has no gas. He is grazing slower and longer, he takes his time.”
So far Socks is a success case but not all horses respond the same. Each individual has his or her own tolerance to pain and when they bite down to suck, they experience pain.

USDA APPROVES CHIP IMPLANTS THAT CAUSE CANCER TUMORS
Over the past couple of years, the OCA has reported on the National Animal Identification System (NAIS), a set of controversial, mandatory regulations the U.S. federal government claims to have abandoned to the states, but in fact is still pushing, specifically, in the 2007 Farm Bill. NAIS would require that all farmers and farm animal owners implant their animals with a computer chip, even those who just own a single cow, horse, chicken or other farm animal.

Texas Horse Talk News Bulletin
A respected Arlington, VA, based public interest law firm, The Institute for Justice, has filed suit in an Austin court to prevent the Texas State Board of Veterinary Medical Examiners from shutting down the practices of unlicensed dentists. These lay practitioners as a rule have much more education regarding treatment of a horse's mouth and teeth than almost all veterinarians. WHY DO HORSES SLEEP STANDING UP?
101 of the most perplexing questions answered about equine enigmas, medical mysteries, and befuddling behaviors
by AUDREY PAVIA
Together with America’s favorite vet, Marty Becker, D.V.M.
Plus Gina Spadafori and Teresa Becker
In WHY DO HORSES SLEEP STANDING UP? the third installment of the bestselling “Why Do” series on pets, venerable writer, horsewoman, and AHP member Audrey Pavia teams up with Good Morning America’s vet-on-call Dr. Marty Becker and nationally syndicated pet-care columnist Gina Spadafori, to enlighten equine enthusiasts.
This entertaining and informative collection of 101 topics presented in a fast-paced Q&A format will stump even your resident horse expert at least once. With insiders’ knowledge and wit, Audrey Pavia and her collaborators unveil little-known facts, myths, behaviors and unusual details about our equine companions.
For example:
QUESTION: What is the world’s most expensive equine purchase?
ANSWER: As of this writing, it’s the Green Monkey, a Thoroughbred who was purchased for an eye-popping $16 million as an un-raced two-year-old in 2006. As of press time, the handsome bay remains un-raced (and un-bred), so for now, no one can say for sure if his potential will ever approach his price tag.
If you look at things from another angle, you could argue that the world’s most valuable horse is the great Thoroughbred sire Storm Cat. Getting your mare a date with the Big Man will cost you a cool half-million.
Born in 1983, this grandson of the great Secretariat is starting to get a little old for stud duty, but since he has sired other horses who are now successfully standing stud themselves – including two sons who reside at the same stud farm – his influence will be felt for many generations to come.
Other questions that are answered include:
• Why do horses get spooked so easily?
• How well do horses see?
• How do directors get horses to fall down in movies?
• Are horses ticklish?
• Does a horse know if he has won a race?
And of course… Why do horses sleep standing up? You’ll have to read the book to find out!
